Development of Bicycle Grips with a Gyroid Structure
Development for Enhanced Comfort and Vibration Damping
How effectively cycling grips absorb vibrations and fit in the hand is not a matter of chance, but the result of a combination of ergonomic design, mathematical simulations, and material testing. For the Czech manufacturer Posedla, we developed such a solution—from the initial concept to a functional prototype ready for serial production.
Posedla, a brand known for producing personalized cycling saddles, decided to expand its portfolio with another key contact point between the rider and the bike—cycling grips. These play a crucial role in comfort, control, and safety during riding.
Digital Design and Optimization
The goal of the collaboration with Brain4Industry was to develop ergonomic and durable grips capable of effectively damping vibrations during riding. At the same time, it was necessary to ensure a secure attachment to the handlebars and prepare the product for future serial production.
The development started with a digital design of both the external and internal geometry of the grip, followed by optimization of its internal structure using mathematical simulations. Thanks to additive manufacturing, we were able to rapidly iterate design variants and validate their properties on functional prototypes. For production, we selected TPU as the material due to its flexibility, softness, and durability.
Prototyping and testing
During the project, several prototypes were developed to test different shapes, surface structures, and material hardness. The issue of slipping on the handlebars was resolved by adding a rigid fixing clamp made of PA12.
Project outcome
The result is a set of functional prototypes ready for further testing and future serial production. The project demonstrates that combining simulations, carefully selected materials, and rapid prototyping enables faster product development and early-stage optimization of key properties.
