{"id":10360,"date":"2026-08-05T09:44:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T07:44:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/brain4industry.cz\/?post_type=case-study&#038;p=10360"},"modified":"2026-08-05T10:18:20","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T08:18:20","slug":"metal-3d-printing-product-development","status":"publish","type":"case-study","link":"https:\/\/brain4industry.cz\/en\/reference\/metal-3d-printing-product-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Development of Premium Titanium Cycling Components"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Concept to a&nbsp;Five-Product Line Using Metal 3D Printing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When expanding its product portfolio, <strong>KODUZ \u2013 DUO, s.r.o.<\/strong> wanted to use the benefits of titanium and the design possibilities of <a href=\"https:\/\/brain4industry.cz\/en\/services\/am-research-and-product-development-manufacturing-systems\/\">additive manufacturing<\/a> to develop a&nbsp;new high-end product line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company turned to Brain4Industry to collaborate on the development of a&nbsp;five-product range of bicycle accessories, including a&nbsp;seatpost, two stems, and two styles of bar ends. All parts were designed for <a href=\"https:\/\/brain4industry.cz\/en\/services\/am-research-and-product-development-manufacturing-systems\/metal-3d-printing-additive-manufacturing-metal-parts\/\">metal 3D printing<\/a> from the start and connected by one shared organic design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A project like this is about more than creating the first design. The challenge is to turn an idea into a&nbsp;working prototype without unnecessary mistakes or delays. By testing and improving the design step by step, the team was able to make better decisions throughout the development process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brain4Industry Solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The project covered the entire development process, from the first sketches to the production of the final titanium components. Engineers from <strong>CARDAM<\/strong>, a&nbsp;member of the Brain4Industry consortium, <a href=\"https:\/\/brain4industry.cz\/en\/services\/am-research-and-product-development-manufacturing-systems\/mechanical-design-product-development\/\">designed the components, created the 3D models<\/a>, and carried out the <a href=\"https:\/\/brain4industry.cz\/en\/services\/am-research-and-product-development-manufacturing-systems\/mathematical-simulations-engineering-simulations\/\">calculations and simulations<\/a>. After that came <a href=\"https:\/\/brain4industry.cz\/en\/services\/am-research-and-product-development-manufacturing-systems\/prototyping-product-development\/\">prototyping<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/brain4industry.cz\/en\/services\/am-research-and-product-development-manufacturing-systems\/metal-3d-printing-additive-manufacturing-metal-parts\/\">metal 3D printing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/brain4industry.cz\/en\/services\/am-research-and-product-development-manufacturing-systems\/postprocessing-product-development\/\">post-processing<\/a>, and preparation for physical load testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The product was developed in several iterations. Plastic models were used to check the shape, proportions, and ergonomics. These were followed by stainless steel and aluminium prototypes, allowing the design to be refined before producing the final titanium prototypes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A key part of the project was the <strong>Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM)<\/strong> approach. Each component was designed specifically for <a href=\"https:\/\/brain4industry.cz\/en\/services\/am-research-and-product-development-manufacturing-systems\/metal-3d-printing-additive-manufacturing-metal-parts\/\">metal 3D printing<\/a> to reduce the need for support structures, minimize material waste, and limit post-machining. The organic design also helps reduce material usage while giving the entire product range a&nbsp;consistent look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Challenges<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The project involved several key challenges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create one consistent organic design across all five components.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design each component specifically for metal 3D printing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduce support structures, material waste, and post-machining.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure the design could withstand the expected loads during use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meet demanding technical and ergonomic requirements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Project Results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The project resulted in a&nbsp;complete set of five titanium bicycle components. The final prototypes were made using <a href=\"https:\/\/brain4industry.cz\/en\/services\/am-research-and-product-development-manufacturing-systems\/metal-3d-printing-additive-manufacturing-metal-parts\/\"><strong>SLM metal 3D printing<\/strong> <\/a>and finished by machining important surfaces and bead blasting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The titanium prototypes are now ready for physical load testing.
