At the same time, growing demand for healthcare is increasing the need to expand production capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In medicine, additive manufacturing is primarily used in combination with biocompatible materials such as titanium and cobalt chromium alloys, enabling the production of precise implants and personalized solutions. While PA12 remains a&nbsp;dominant material, demand for flexible TPU, which is widely used in healthcare, is rapidly growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additive technologies are opening the door to personalized medicine, more precise implants, faster development, and possibilities that only a&nbsp;few years ago were limited to research laboratories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current state and future potential of these technologies are discussed by Brain4Industry R&amp;D Manager <a href=\"https:\/\/brain4industry.cz\/en\/team\/jan-hrdlicka-3\/\">Marek Havel<\/a> in an interview with Adelaine Rozinkov\u00e1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tissue Engineering and the Role of Additive Manufacturing in Healthcare<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can you briefly introduce tissue engineering and additive manufacturing in healthcare?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I first encountered this field during my university studies. At that time, a&nbsp;research group printed an ear scaffold, a&nbsp;structure that serves as a&nbsp;framework for cell growth. The scaffold was implanted into a&nbsp;mouse, tissue grew around it, and the original structure gradually dissolved. In a&nbsp;similar way, it may be possible to create other parts of the human body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key Benefits for Patients<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are the main benefits of additive manufacturing in improving patients\u2019 quality and length of life? Can 3D printing save lives?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would not say it saves lives directly in the sense that someone would come back to life thanks to additive manufacturing. Rather, it significantly improves quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, implants are widely used. In the case of skull injuries, a&nbsp;plate can be produced precisely according to the shape of the bone, implanted, and gradually integrated into the body. The patient then lives with a&nbsp;titanium replacement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prosthetic limbs such as arms or legs are also commonly produced using additive technologies. A&nbsp;major advantage is the ability to create an interface tailored exactly to the patient\u2019s anatomy, ensuring maximum comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Future of Printed Organs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If it becomes possible to print entire organs, could this save lives in the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is an excellent question. Even if we were able to print functional lungs or organs such as the liver or kidneys, their production and preparation for transplantation would take time, and patients would need to be kept alive using other technologies in the meantime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if a&nbsp;patient would otherwise die while waiting for a&nbsp;transplant and a&nbsp;printed organ were available sooner, then this technology could potentially save lives in the future. Its key benefit would be reducing waiting times for transplants, although this is still a&nbsp;matter for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Materials Used in Medical Additive Manufacturing<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Which materials are most commonly used in healthcare applications?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biocompatible titanium and cobalt chromium alloys are widely used. In addition, various polymers are applied, some of which are biodegradable and allow gradual replacement by bone tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in complex fractures, it is possible to print a&nbsp;structure that is gradually replaced by natural bone while the original material dissolves over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Custom Implant Production<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How are patient specific implants produced?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process is similar to manufacturing a&nbsp;technical component. It begins with data acquisition, typically from CT scans or MRI imaging. Based on this data, a&nbsp;digital model of the implant is created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The part is then printed. However, both the material and the printer must be certified for medical use, and the entire process must comply with strict regulatory standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Development Capabilities at Brain4Industry<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If we wanted to develop implants or scaffolds, is this technologically possible at Brain4Industry, at least at the level of development and prototyping?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the development level, yes. The main challenge is certification. Anything produced here could not be directly used in a&nbsp;patient\u2019s body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Current Applications in Medicine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In which medical fields are additively manufactured implants most commonly used today?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good example is dentistry. Dental implants are now a&nbsp;standard part of modern medicine. It is possible to print the entire implant, including the polymer body of the tooth, as well as metal components used for reinforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Technology Transforming Healthcare<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/brain4industry.cz\/en\/services\/am-research-and-product-development-manufacturing-systems\/\">Additive technologies<\/a> in tissue engineering are moving from experimental applications toward real use in modern medicine.
