Digital twin of production

A simulation model/digital twin is a virtual model or replica of an actual physical production facility, process or entire production environment.

Operation simulations

A digital twin works on the principle of collecting data from the real world using sensors and other equipment. This information is then transmitted and processed in the digital space to create a virtual model, which precisely corresponds to reality. Thanks to the simulation model / digital twin, the company can predict the behavior of systems during internal or external changes (e.g. change of production portfolio, expansion of production facilities, purchase of new technologies, legislative changes in work organisation, etc.).

With the help of a digital twin, manufacturing companies can get an accurate overview of the behavior and performance of their equipment, identify weak spots, and look for ways to improve. Virtual simulation enables testing different scenarios and performing analyses in real-time, which significantly reduces the risk of errors and enables more efficient production planning.

Thanks to virtual models, development teams can quickly iterate and experiment with new ideas and designs which results in faster product development and implementation of new technologies in the production process.

THE CONCLUSIONS FROM THE SIMULATION STUDIES ENABLE TO:

  • Increase production,
  • reduce (machine, personnel) downtime,
  • reduce the number of personnel,
  • Reduce the risk of missing deadlines,
  • get a new transportation system up and running faster,
  • get a new or upgraded production line up and running faster,
  • verify the intended organizational and management measures and thus eliminate incorrect decisions that could lead to significant problems in the company.

Other benefits of a digital twin include a better understanding of process functioning in a business, and awareness of different relations between processes, which facilitates managerial decisions. Simulation study implementation can lead to straightening of processes in the company, and a greater competitive advantage in winning new long-term contracts.

Simulation models can help to predict, compare, and optimize the behavior of a particular enterprise without amendments to the real system. They allow to verify all decisions before physical implementation and costly investment (e.g. construction of a new production hall and purchase of equipment).
The output is the creation of transport rules, work organization, layout adjustments, setting up transport routes, etc. A digital twin can help with the answer to the question: What happens if …?
